[edit] Best Bars for Hungry Vegetarians with Kids

  • D's SixPax & Dogz: Beer cave and veggie dogs with all the fixins. Combine with a stroller walk down to the hollow of Frick Park, to check out the reconstructed wetland at Nine Mile Run or to the playground at Forbes and S. Braddock or just through the neighborhood and trails.
  • Buffalo Blues in Shadyside/East Liberty: Just because the Hot Vegetarian is a great sandwich, and yum to sweet potato chips. Hop down to Ellsworth Ave for vintage stores, art galleries, coffee shops or over the bridge to Borders.
  • The Double Wide Grill on the South Side: Many great vegetarian options, hilarious concept and decor. Can connect to the South Side Works for fake main street shopping and onw of the greatest fountains in Pittsburgh (must bring bathing suits or change of clothes for kids, (Goodwill is across the street if you're desperate). Walk down Carson Street for the true South Side experience—beware the drunks on weekend nights.

[edit] Liquor

The infamous Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board makes buying liquor and wine difficult and confusing (and expensive!). Many liquor stores are closed on Sunday or close early on Sunday. Recommendations?

Dreadnought Wines in the Strip have a sort of "loophole" status- Wine purchases have a $50.00 minimum order and require two business days for processing through the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board System (which didn't mean that we had to fill out paperwork or anything- that part was totally behind-the-scenes).

Given this, they're not really made for walk-in purchases, but they are way better than a state store, especially for parties (they deliver, pick up unopened bottles, and made great suggestions for our party). They also have a monthly club/subscription system of sorts. Their selection is good, prices are reasonable, and customer service is outstanding.

[edit] Groceries

  • That Mexican Store in the Strip. Grat products, imported from mexico plus great fresh items made in-house like fresh tortillas, tamales and other yummy items.
  • Whole foods, or the Whole Paycheck. Good food.
